Important of Product Packaging
We can define product packaging as a type of technology that involves concealing and protecting a product for purposes of use, distribution or storage. It can also be defined as the process of designing, evaluating and manufacturing packages for products. It is typically a coordinated system which only purpose is to prepare goods or products for transport, sale, logistics, warehousing and end use. This is a very ideal technology because it protects, contains, transports, preserves, informs and sells the product. It is very much integrated in almost every country in the world by government, industrial, institutional, business and even in personal ventures.
It is seen in the ancient era that the first packages used were made up of the natural materials that were available during that time. For example, they would use wooden boxes, wooden barrels, baskets of reeds, pottery vases, wine skins, woven bags, ceramic amphorae and the like.
The early glass and bronze are other materials that were processed and used to make packages and got developed as time went by. In the modern era tinplate was invented which enabled people to store their products in tins. Tinning was improved by inventors so that food could be transported and preserved for a longer period and tin canning was invented as a result. After canning was invented inventors grew wiser and were able to come up with the paper-based packaging. As a new era was ushered in the 20th century, product packaging developed in a huge way because more packaging materials were made. Transparent cellophane over wraps, panels on cartons and Bakelite closures on bottles are the inventions added to the product packaging section. Since then, packaging become a worldwide commodity that was very essential in developed and developing countries.
Apart from concealing products, product packaging has many more uses. Mechanical shock, electrostatic discharge, temperature and the like are some of the physical dangers that products need protection from. It provides a blurrier protection like from water vapor, oxygen, dust and so on. Product packaging also gives an opportunity to be able to transmit information to the consumers through the labeling the product on the external face of the package. It has encouraged the marketing of the particular product that will be packed in the package. Product packaging has cover also most every corner concerning security because there are packages that are tamper resistant in that they can deter manipulation of the package and they can also be tamper-evident meaning they can show if a package is tampered with or not. The packages are also designed to have features that add convenience in display, handling, reclosing, sale, recycling, distribution, ease in disposal, reusing and stacking.
